IINE Leadership Team Joseph Gilbert
Associate Director, Manchester ESOL Program
Joseph Gilbert
Joe’s passion is language, and his work in education is driven by his awareness that language discrimination is an ongoing challenge that creates both structural barriers and individual biases. A writer of short stories and plays, Joe taught English in a variety of contexts for several years, including a seven-year stint at the University of New Hampshire, before finding his way to IINE, where he was excited by the prospect of using his skills to help refugees succeed in their new lives in New Hampshire.
Joe holds a BA in English, MFA in Writing, and MA in Languages and Linguistics. In addition to his work as Associate Director of ESOL in IINE’s Manchester, New Hampshire office, he is involved in several digital equity and digital literacy initiatives to give more people access to the internet as a gateway to educational and professional opportunities.
An old-school New England Yankee, outside of his education work and creative writing, Joe is a bit of a homesteader. He enjoys living outside of the city on land that’s full of gardens, fruit trees, ducks and geese; outfitting his home for solar energy; and cutting his own firewood in the winter. He is also a cinephile, a lover of table-top role-playing games, and when he finds the time, an avid traveler with his family.
