Planned giving is a thoughtful and strategic approach to philanthropy that allows individuals to make larger gifts than they could from their income alone. It involves integrating charitable gifts into one’s overall financial, tax, and estate planning objectives, thus maximizing the benefits to both the donor and the charity. This type of giving typically includes bequests made in a will, life insurance policies, gifts of real estate, trusts, or annuities. The process usually involves consultation with financial advisors or estate planners to ensure that the donation aligns with the donor’s long-term financial goals and philanthropic intentions.
For the International Institute of New England (IINE), planned gifts are a cornerstone of sustained support. They provide a reliable source of funding that can have a transformative impact on IINE’s ability to carry out its mission. When donors include IINE in their estate planning, they are making a powerful statement about their belief in the importance of supporting refugees and immigrants. These contributions ensure that the organization can continue its vital work in resettlement, education, career advancement, and citizenship programming for years to come. Additionally, planned giving can create a lasting legacy for the donor, embedding their values and commitment to social justice in the ongoing success of IINE. This form of donation not only contributes to the financial health and stability of IINE but also strengthens its capacity to plan for the future and respond effectively to the changing needs of the communities it serves.
After the 2016 election we were horrified with the anti-immigrant rhetoric and activity and began to look for ways to help refugees. We learned of IINE at that time. We brought a program from IINE to our continuing care retirement community, Carleton-Willard, and collected items to be donated. I attended an annual award banquet in Boston. Our son is an attorney for INS and we are aware of what is going on from that point of view. Our connection to IINE is a tangible way that we can do something.”
I support the International Institute of New England because of its long track record and proven results in helping immigrants and refugees. IINE has developed programs to support these newcomers and ensure they get the health care, language skills and training needed to become productive citizens. Now more than ever the services of IINE are needed to smooth the way for new generations of immigrants.”
Immigrants, often refugees, arrive in the U.S. bewildered, frightened, and overwhelmed. They come here with hopes for a better life than the one they left, and many really had no choice. I was lucky to be born and raised here and I am glad to share my good fortune with others who have had a challenging path.
IINE provides tools for immigrants to succeed, and we benefit from them being here. Take a look around and see who is providing services at restaurants, hotels and airports, not to mention health care, and more. It is important for me to help provide people with the tools they need to succeed in this new, foreign world … IINE does a marvelous job, under a great deal of pressure, with grace, care and good humor.”
It was at a Suitcase Stories® event back in 2017 that I first learned about IINE. I was so moved by the stories I heard, I became an IINE volunteer in Lowell tutoring English. It is a singularly American experience to sit in an IINE classroom with 20+ people of different nationalities, genders, and ages learning English together.
As the son of immigrants, I feel compelled to help people seeking a better life for themselves and their families. My wife, Jill Block, and I are committed to supporting IINE’s mission with our philanthropic giving. It’s a joy to know that our contributions are helping people from all over the world settle in New England and build productive lives.”
There’s a beautiful spot in County Mayo, Ireland. There’s not much there except sheep, the ruins of a cottage, and impressive views out to Clare Island and Clew Bay. I was lucky enough to visit this spot on a trip to Ireland and I wondered what made my great-grandfather emigrate from that cottage in the late 1800s. The answer we got from the locals was, “You can’t eat views.”
I don’t know his whole story, but I often think of my great-grandfather when I read the news about people emigrating from Afghanistan, Haiti, Ukraine, and other far-flung places around the world. I’m convinced no one leaves their home unless they have no other choice. I believe we have a responsibility to welcome refugees and immigrants with open arms … It’s an honor immigrants still want to come here and contribute so much. Thank you for all you do to help refugees and immigrants.
